The name "Jack-o'-lantern" originated in England in the 17th century. “Jack-o’-lantern” means “Jack with a lantern,” just like a night watchman. It is also a commonly used phenomenon associated with folkloric characters such as ghosts and fairies, or mysterious flickering blue lights seen in wetlands.
As depicted in Thomas Darlington's "South Cheshire Public Talks" published in 1887; In the late 1800s, people carved hard root vegetables such as turnips, roughly representing the human face, and made a lantern by placing a candle inside. On the two feast days of "All Saints' Day", celebrated on November 1, and "Day of All Souls," celebrated on November 2, Catholic children would go from door to door to commemorate their dead with lanterns carved from turnips, asking for cake. Lanterns made of turnips are also used in the parade on "Guy Fawkes Day" celebrated on November 5.
