Fairy belief is particularly prevalent in Ireland, Cornwall, Wales and Scotland. Scottish priest Robert Kirk, in his book The Secret Commonwealth of Elves, Fauns and Fairies (1763; The Secret World of Elves, Fauns and Fairies), written in 1691, says that fairies are beings between man and angel. In the indictment of the case in which Jeanne d'Arc was tried on charges of heresy in the 15th century, a full definition of fairies is also included. Since the Middle Ages, artists such as Italian Matteo Boiardo and Ludovico Ariosto, English Edmund Spenser, French Charles Perrault and Danish Hans Christian Andersen have used fairies in their works.
